This Friday, July 13th, documentary DECONSTRUCTING DAD makes it theatrical debut at NYC’s Quad Theater for a one-week run. PSD was able to chat with the Writer/Director/Producer of the film, Stan Warnow.
From Scott Doc Website:
The feature-length documentary is a music-filled biographical film about the life and work of Raymond Scott. It also is a personal investigation into the father/son dynamic — what it means to have a famous father obsessed with his work and the consequent impact on the parent/child relationship.
I wanted to tackle the history of Stan Warnow, on top of the story of his father, in our interview. We started first talking about Stan’s days at NYU film school.
From their Stan got into the editing world and his journey started with music based films like 1970′s Woodstock.
Stan Warnow – Early Music Films
A decade later Stan would jump into the political film world with doc’s like, In Our Hands.
Stan has a wonderful career in the film business check out his stacked IMDB page.
Stan’s NYC background is strongly rooted, but even he admits that LA seems to always come calling.
So far we’d covered Stan’s background and then I asked him about a connection he had with his father. In Deconstructing Dad, I was amazed at all that Raymond Scott accomplished with his technological upgrades, tweaks and inventions. Stan himself shared that same love of technology and I asked him if he knew, prior to the film, that he shared that love with his dad.
Stan was open about the fact that he learned a lot about his dad in making the documentary.
Stan and I are both fans of Errol Morris, in particular Errol’s great interview style. I asked Stan about his interview process.
Stan Warnow – Interview Process
Not all the interviews were easy to get and even when he did “get” them they didn’t always go as planned.
I asked Stan about which interview stood out the most to him.
Stan Warnow – Stand Out Interview
I then asked him about another intriguing connection Stan and his father shared, Warner Bros Studios.
Stan Warnow – Warner Bros Connections
Stan ended our chat with a really cool story of how the US Navy honors his father to this day.
Stan Warnow – West Point Ender
