Also we have a real treat with the Q & A session that followed the AMAZING Kodo Drummers of Japan that were in town this past Thursday night. O and how about Jean-Michel Cousteau on Wednesday Night. Yep the big red Winspear has been quite busy as of late!
When Samurais and World-Class Drummers show-up at the Winspear Opera House you know the party is going to be awesome!! Well on Thursday February 17th the Kodo Drummers of Japan absolutely ROCKED the sold-out Winspear.
To think they only used the Big Drum a handful of times!! It wouldn’t be fair to try and “play” for you the sounds of the show, rather I’d like to share with you the Q & A that immediately followed the incredible showcase.
TITAS Executive Director Charles Santos and Artistic Director for the KODO Drummers Mitsuru Ishikuza talked about the drums, the history and the music behind Kodo. The conversation started with what the Drums themselves are made out of.
The actual usages of the drums is also based on what type of wood they are made from.
Now the actual influences behind the Drummers musical tastes is actually really eclectic.
The more historic elements of the Kodo Drummers also has a unique story.
The amazing quality these drummers have is their incredible discipline and the physicality of the art form is quite rigorous.
The conversation ended with a great question about whether or not the Kodo Drummers improvise during their performances.
The Kodo Drummers of Japan event was another wonderful showcase of TITAS.
Speaking of TITAS presents, this Saturday The Chieftains will be at the Winspear showcasing their own musical talents.
“Any discussion of traditional Irish music on the contemporary scene has to begin with six-time Grammy Award winning group, The Chieftains. Starting in 1962, this engaging and endlessly talented ensemble of Irish cultural ambassadors made the traditional music of their island home popular around the world. The Chieftains have never stopped pushing into new territory, reinvigorating traditional Celtic forms with fresh ideas and eclectic influences. Major stars of pop and rock, American country and bluegrass music and numerous world-music genres line up to collaborate with these Irish masters. In their five decades as a group, The Chieftains have sold millions of records. Favorites of North Texas audiences, they bring great humor, joyful exuberance and, of course, fabulous music to the TITAS season and the AT&T Performing Arts Center.”

He has produced more than 80 films, receiving Emmy, Peabody and Cable Ace Awards for his work.”
